PhD Master Class GEO-C > Changing Smart Cities through Open Data
Zoom Smart Cities 2017, May 8, 13:00 – 14:00 Sala do Senado
Chair: Miguel de Castro Neto (NOVA IMS)
“Geoinformatics Enabling Open Smart Cities” and the session is going to discuss about wide ranging topics such as Volunteered geographic information, integration in public participation and geographic information systems and smart cities; Multi-scale, multidimensional urban information integration, matching and visualization for smart cities; Situational awareness as a service for smart cities; and Open City Toolkit towards realizing Smart Cities: visions from GEO-C project. The session will introduce the notion of opening smart cities in the context of enhanced citizen participation, open data initiatives and collaborative smart cities development, and merging smart cities research areas into one complete platform.
AGENDA
- Volunteered geographic information, integration in public participation and geographic information systems and smart cities (Albert Acedo)
- Multi-scale, multidimensional urban information integration, matching and visualization for smart cities (Manuel Fernando Benítez)
- Situational awareness as a service for smart cities (Manuel Portela)
- Open City Toolkit towards realizing Smart Cities: visions from GEO-C project (Devanjan Bhattacharya)
The first presentation by Albert Acedo is about research to understand citizens that produce Geographic Information, identifying their motivations.; Assess whether the use of neo-geography derived techniques contributes to develop the ability to understand the complexity of geographic space, in two different sets of analysis: data production through VGI, and, the use of the analytical capabilities of the systems; to investigate the relationship between PPGIS and VGI and build a use model for VGI in PPGIS.
The second presentation by Manuel Fernando Benítez is about research to overcome the problem of having several geodata sources and sensors that have disparate resolutions (both spatial and temporal) which need to be allied together in order to extract useful knowledge doing analyses and to display the outcome in a variety of devices, including traditional screens as well as current and coming displays and interaction devices as AR and wearable technologies.
The third presentation by Manuel Portela is about research to investigate how sensor data can be stored, enriched, interlinked and made accessible in a uniform way, how such rich, interlinked data can enable situational awareness for the benefit of individual citizens and, more specifically, how to deliver and develop customized and focused services (i.e. situational awareness services), which are aware of one’s surrounding environment.
The fourth presentation by Devanjan Bhattacharya is about an Open City Toolkit which is a collection of tools, processes, specifications and guidelines to empower citizens to participate in and shape the future of their cities, and to deliver services based on open data that are useful for citizens, businesses and governing bodies alike.
ABOUT GEO-C
GEO-C – Joint Doctorate in Geoinformatics: Enabling Open Cities
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:
Albert Acedo
Early Stage Researcher GEO-C at NOVA IMS UNL, studied Geomatic and Surveying Engineering at Polytechnic University of Catalonia. He worked as surveyor for six years. He finished his Master in Territorial Planning and Environmental Management at University of Barcelona in 2013, where he had the opportunity of being involved in some research projects related with hybridity in the public space. Then he took the Erasmus Mundus MSc. in Geospatial Technologies, focusing in the interaction between technology, space and citizens from a participatory point of view.
Manuel Fernando Benítez
Early Stage Researcher GEO-C at UJI Spain. He was Cadastral and Geodetic Engineer at Francisco José de Caldas District University in Bogota – Colombia, He was coordinator of a team of innovation in Colombia and Developer Program Manager in Esri Colombia creating geographic applications, His main interest are GIS, development of native/web applications and spatial analysis.
Manuel Portela
Interactive Designer and Researcher at GEO-C PhD Programme at UJI Spain, interested in fields related to SmartCities and HCI. He coursed a Msc on Urban Studies at Universidad Nacional General Sarmiento in Argentina. He have been researching in the Instituto Superior de Urbanismo at the Universidad de Buenos Aires. And, over the last years, he worked at Gobierno de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires as an advisor in SmartCities and digitalization. He also developed several projects oriented to civic engagement and participation in Latin América.
Devanjan Bhattacharya
PhD, Manager, Science & Technology, GEO-C Smart Cities Project, NOVA IMS, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, researches on geospatial technologies and geographical information system for sustainable development, planning and management of resources. With a background in information technology and geomatics engineering his current interests range from smart cities geo-informatics to SDIs and big geodata. In this talk he will put forward the notion of opening up smart cities in the context of enhanced citizen participation, open data initiatives and collaborative smart cities development, from the point of view of GEO-C a project funded by EU in NOVA IMS, UNL and how several early stage researchers involved in GEO-C are merging their PhD research areas into one complete platform.
